Riding to win ALS

The Società Ciclistica Castellettese Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica, based in Via Giotto, Castelletto Sopra Ticino (NO), engaged in the realization of sporting events in the territory, intends to organize a new initiative in support of scientific research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on the occasion of the ALS GLOBAL DAY, which is celebrated worldwide in June: “GRANFONDO DEL LAGO MAGGIORE” – 17 June 2018

Winning the challenge against ALS by supporting scientific research

The good cause

The proceeds of the Granfondo del Lago Maggiore will be donated entirely to AriSLA, the Italian Research Foundation for ALS, the main body in Italy and Europe that is exclusively responsible for promoting, financing and coordinating scientific research on ALS.

ALS, which today sees the presence of about 6,000 patients in our country, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects adults and is characterized by the progressive death of motor neurons. The ALS “imprisons” little by little in one’s own body: over time the disease immobilizes, prevents one from walking, moving, communicating, and compromising vital functions, but does not make those who are affected lose the ability to think, to feel emotions and willingness and the need to share their own life experience with others. To this day, there are no therapies that can effectively stop the disease and only scientific research can give answers to the hopes of those affected.

AriSLA Foundation was founded in 2008 with the sole aim of financing the best scientific projects to get to know the causes of ALS as soon as possible and to experiment with new treatments. Since 2009 AriSLA has invested in scientific research activities over 10.6 million €, funded 62 projects, involving more than 250 researchers and promoting a network of 25 clinical centers nationwide.

AriSLA Team

For years the Società Ciclistica Castellettese has been promoting initiatives in the territory to raise awareness and support scientific research on ALS alongside the AriSLA Foundation. The idea of a Granfondo del Lago Maggiore was born from the synergy of the Società Ciclistica Castellettese with the “AriSLA Team”, a group composed today by over 100 independent volunteers that since 2016 runs to make known the ALS and raise awareness on the importance of supporting scientific research.

The “AriSLA Team” developed from an idea of the “Amici di Daniele”, an association that has been active for five years on the territory with various initiatives to raise awareness and raise funds for research, in memory of the friend who died prematurely due to the ALS. Among them, cycling enthusiasts have chosen to continue to promote research by enhancing their passion: in the team are also involved ex professional cyclists such as Noemi Cantele, Francesco Frattini, Luca Barattero, Luca Bramati, Daniele Nardello, Monica Brunati, Eleonora Guelpa. The showgirl Justine Mattera also decided to join the mission of “AriSLA Team”.

In these two years the “AriSLA Team” has participated in cycling competitions – one of them the “12H Cycling Marathon”, a night race that takes place in the circuit of Monza – and for 2018 will be partner of the Granfondo del Lago Maggiore, as the first and only competition of its kind in our territory.
