The proceeds of the Granfondo del Lago Maggiore will be donated entirely to AriSLA, the Italian Research Foundation for ALS, the main body in Italy and Europe that is exclusively responsible for promoting, financing and coordinating scientific research on ALS.
ALS, which today sees the presence of about 6,000 patients in our country, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects adults and is characterized by the progressive death of motor neurons. The ALS “imprisons” little by little in one’s own body: over time the disease immobilizes, prevents one from walking, moving, communicating, and compromising vital functions, but does not make those who are affected lose the ability to think, to feel emotions and willingness and the need to share their own life experience with others. To this day, there are no therapies that can effectively stop the disease and only scientific research can give answers to the hopes of those affected.
AriSLA Foundation was founded in 2008 with the sole aim of financing the best scientific projects to get to know the causes of ALS as soon as possible and to experiment with new treatments. Since 2009 AriSLA has invested in scientific research activities over 10.6 million €, funded 62 projects, involving more than 250 researchers and promoting a network of 25 clinical centers nationwide.
